“GODS
AND GODDESSES, ARCHETYPES IN THE MANIFEST”
Norse Berserkers wore a pelt of
bear skin. The word “ber-serk” means “bear-shirt” or bear-coat people.
In my
own practice of calling in the directions, Bear is associated with the West.
This direction represents and reminds us of Transformation. Much as Bear goes
to sleep for the winter – hibernates and then emerges again in Spring – so we,
too, hibernate and reawaken. Our creative energies, our zest for life, our
“outward” energies can go through such a transformation – healing and
nourishing, quiet and solitary at times.
Cherokee
tales include the story of Bear Tribe as a race of Huans who returned to the
Wild – becoming Bears in the process. [need sources!]
